Patrick Morgan - Author Spotlight
Patrick Morgan was one of the first authors I followed on my book account back in 2021. He miraculously popped up as someone I should follow. Well, here’s to you, Instagram… you nailed it!
The first book of his I read was Apparent Horizon. It’s the kind of book that isn’t just a story; it’s an entire experience. I was stressed, had goosebumps, and couldn’t tear through the pages fast enough.
I wrote a review, tagged him in it, and the rest is history. He was the first author who showed me the power of the platform to create friendships over the love of books and creativity.
What I quickly learned is this guy is a legit storyteller. Now, you may be thinking: duh, Rachel; he’s an author! In my opinion, all authors do tell stories but not all of them are great at it. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy their books (some of them I love and adore) but it could be they excel in other things (like the author who can write the perfect thriller twist, someone who writes characters you feel deep in your bones, or the author who can draft dialogue that is chef’s kiss).
Patrick Morgan writes books that take you outside yourself, and what you know to be true, and push those boundaries. The string that ties all of his books together is this idea of “what the hell is happening?”
Talking to Patrick was a blast; he didn’t hesitate on throwing out controversial statements. For example, he’s not a trope guy.
“I know I’m probably in the minority, but I never think of tropes when I’m creating. I don’t want to put these labels on my books. I have to do what I want to do, based on the books I’ve read, and the research I’ve done. When I’m crafting the story, I want the details to serve the story.” He shared.
We discussed ratings, trigger warnings, and what it was like writing his latest book, It Will End In Disaster. This is best classified as an erotic thriller. When I asked how he got the idea to dive into this specific space, his answer didn’t disappoint.
“It came from an Instagram live. I was chatting with Caitlin (Moss) and Alejandra (Andrade) and we were talking about dipping into other genres. Someone asked, during the live, if I’d ever try an erotic thriller. And here we are.” He laughs while he talks about it.
Something that’s been thrown around is the idea of men not being good at writing spice, or open-door sex scenes.
“I did have people messaging me, sharing they were skeptical of a man writing a spicy book. Thankfully, many of those readers have given positive feedback on the story.”
From my perspective, the spice in this book is well done. It’s sexy, sensual, and hits the right spot. I think good spice is hard to do and not everyone is skilled in this area. Patrick gets a nod from me in that aspect.
Before he was writing, he was an actor. If you’ve read his latest book, don’t despair, this is not an autobiography. His experience with acting plays a key role in the story.
“Out of my five books, this one is the most personal, in the sense of drawing from a lot of my own experiences.”
While it’s an erotic thriller, I think It Will End In Disaster still tackles heavy themes like loyalty, true happiness, and what it means (and costs) to be successful.
Patrick’s new release, It Will End In Disaster, is his first venture into self-publishing. His previous books were published by Phase Publishing, a small press, which was an enjoyable experience.
“I’ve always been curious about self-publishing.” He explained. “I really have to tip my hat to Caitlin and Alejandra. We met up and were able to discuss this process and they’ve been a great support system.”
Another support system he talked about was social media, specifically “bookstagram” (the corner of Instagram obsessed with all things books).
“It’s such a nice community of people who really want to help each other out. No matter what, the underlying thing is everyone loves books. We’re all trying to read and tell stories.” He said. “The power that this community has to move the needle on books from indies or small publishers is amazing. It’s one of my favorite parts.”
While I love all of Patrick’s books, I’ve reread Realms and Viaticum. I could go on for days about both, but we’ll leave that for another day…
Patrick currently resides in Los Angeles with his sweet pup, Cider. He does whatever he can to spend most of his time outside.
